Overweight & Obesity in Childhood: Prevention & Management

This four module online CME aims to better equip physicians and other health care providers in providing effective care for their pediatric patients who are overweight and obese. The following learning objectives will be addressed:
Module #1: Background of the Overweight Problem
  • To explain the rapidly increasing rates of obesity among adults and
children in the United States
  • To calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • To identify important risks associated with childhood overweight
Module #2: Overweight Prevention Strategies
  • To identify a child's risk for overweight by conducting a risk assessment
  • To explain optimal health care practices to prevent obesity in your patients and their families
Module #3: Medical Assessment for the Overweight and at Risk for Overweight Child
  • To determine who should be given a medical assessment for overweight based on BMI and other risk factors, and explain what the medical assessment should include
  • To connect findings from the medical assessment to potential medical conditions related to overweight and be able to identify specialists for referral, if necessary
Module #4: Management of the Overweight Child
  • To explain and use the ABCs of counseling to effectively counsel patients and families
  • To develop a treatment program that encourages small, gradual changes in weight goals and physical activity
  • To recognize common medical complications associated with overweight through screening procedures and refer to a specialist, when necessary

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The California Medical Association and WellPoint. The California Medical Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The California Medical Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This credit may also be applied to the CMA Certification in Continuing Medical Education.
