Portland Community College, CLIMB Center for Advancement, Health Professionals Pharmacy Technician 51,0805 Pharmacy Technician/Assistant The Institute for Health Professionals Pharmacy Technician Program is a two part course totaling 160 hours and combines online learning with onsite lab practicums. Term I, participants will learn about the practice of pharmacy, pharmacy law, regulations and standards as related to technicians from a practical and administrative perspective. Studentís learning will prepare them for the certification requirements and knowledge domain areas covered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE.). Participants will learn basic pharmacology, therapeutic drug classes, body systems, common conditions, diseases and related medical terminology. Further, generic/brand drug names, look alike-sound alike medications, common dosage forms and routes of administration will be covered. Use of drug references and information systems are incorporated. Participants will begin basic to advanced pharmacy measurements, abbreviations and calculations. Lessons will be supported by weekly onsite lab activities. Term II, (PREREQ: Term I, Pharmacy Tech CEU 941Q) Participants will continue basic to advanced pharmacy measurements, abbreviations and calculations as well as pharmacology. Students will learn to read and identify components of medication labels, read written and electronic prescriptions, and be able to identify DEA numbers in addition to processing and handling of medications and medication orders. Sterile and non-sterile compounding, sterile preparation, and Aseptic technique are incorporated. Pharmacy technology will be explored to include Inventory management, ordering systems, billing and electronic health-records systems. The importance of patient safety, medication safety, and quality assurance are discussed. Workplace interactions, professionalism and other soft-skills are incorporated as well. Portland Community College, CLIMB Center for Advancement, Health Professionals Phlebotomy Program 51,0802 Clinical/Medical Laboratory Assistant Phlebotomy at the Institute for Health Professionals is delivered in two consecutive terms. There is a very specific application process with selected applicants invited to interview. This two-term course provides knowledge and experience to work as a phlebotomist and to qualify to take the American Society of Clinical Pathology certification exam. Term one is a 90-hour course consisting of both classroom and lab work. Studies include blood collecting, handling, transporting, and processing blood specimens along with an introduction to laboratory information systems, anatomy, physiology of pertinent body systems, pathologic conditions, lab equipment use/care, safety precautions, HIPAA, and monitoring quality control. Term two consists of a 100-hour clinical rotation in a hospital or clinic setting where the student must complete a minimum of 100 successful, supervised blood draws. Students perform blood draws and assist in performing routine clinical laboratory tests under the supervision of a pathologist, medical technologist or physician. Once a student successfully completes their clinical rotation, they are prepared and eligible for the national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathologists. CEU

Portland Community College Sterile Processing Technician 51,1012 Sterile Processing Technology/Technician Health Care Term One includes 42 hours of online live lecture, self-directed study and in-class training. You will learn the basics of sterile processing including; infection control and prevention, decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, instrumentation, storage, distribution, inventory control, microbiology, medical terminology as well as anatomy & physiology. Term Two 80-hours clinical in a hospital laboratory setting or outpatient facility approved by PCC Institute for Health Professionals. Successful completion of term one leads to term two 80-hours of clinical practicum. Student will be placed in one of the local area hospitals to job shadow sterile processing technicians as well as get some hands on experience.
